When pulling together my online portfolio, as with any design project, I start with wireframes. Simple pen to paper sketches.
I find this to be the best way to go back to the basics and think through the process of how the user experiences the site.
When looking at my online portfolio, some basic thoughts that I incorporated are that the:- Content fits within the browser screen; without scrolling options
(ie: overflow: hidden;) - Left navigation is collapsable (javascript)
- Color scheme is strong with popping accents
- and the florals add Visual appeal (not too girly) but don't take away from the content of the rest of the site
